The content of the Course will include overview summaries on ECMO indications and contraindications, ECMO physiology, cannulation techniques and other aspects of ECMO patient care and management including anticoagulation and weaning. The educational format will combine didactic sessions with interactive group simulation sessions to enhance the learning experience. The Simulation environment will allow for hands-on learning and active instruction on topics such as circuit check, equipment components, alarms, pressure monitoring, and emergency procedures. The course will utilize the simulation sessions to demonstrate the didactic sessions’ learning objectives through clinical case simulation scenarios.  Faculty and simulation educators will facilitate discussions on team training, clinical critical thinking and decision making.

  • 1. Describe key indications and contraindications for ECMO in Neonatal and Pediatric patients.
  • 2. Identify key role and responsibilities of the various team members.
  • 3. List at least 4 common ECMO emergencies.
  • 4. Demonstrate the troubleshooting process of an ECMO circuit during a scenario
Who should attend:

This two day workshop is designed for physicians and other health care professionals caring for neonates and paediatric patients with severe acute respiratory and cardiac failure who receive extracorporeal life support (ECLS). The workshop will be conducted as per ELSO guidelines under the guidance of internationally recognized ECLS experts.

The course is appropriate for new ECMO centres or those wanting to expand their expertise in neonatal and paediatric ECMO.
